Summary:

Dr. Joan Burleigh has spent her entire career as an instructor, researcher, author, and inventor working on improving the lives of those with auditory processing disorders and other disabilities. Since 2005, Dr. Burleigh has continued her work in this field as the CEO of the Fort Collins, Colorado-based non-profit Able Kids Foundation. In co-founding the Able Kids Foundation, Dr. Joan Burleigh sought to create a unique organization capable of blending cutting-edge research, clinical assessment, management capabilities, and technology into intelligent solutions for the education and growth of individuals with auditory challenges. To this end, Dr. Burleigh recently spearheaded the creation of the I AM ABLE™ Public Service Initiative. This program, designed to showcase abilities, includes the annual I AM ABLE™ Art Extravaganza! and the I AM ABLE™ Sponsorship Assistance Program. Before becoming involved with the Able Kids Foundation, Dr. Joan Burleigh worked as a Senior Research Scientist and Scholar for Colorado State University in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. As part of this position, Dr. Burleigh was also the Director of CSU’s Center for Central Auditory Research where she was responsible for managing all research projects and clinical evaluations that came to the Center. During this time, Dr. Burleigh greatly contributed to a number of important projects and led the effort in coordinating a team of researchers and research assistants. In addition to her ongoing leadership of the Able Kids Foundation, Dr. Joan Burleigh was the associate producer of the award-winning film, “Silent World, Lonely World.” A member of the American Speech and Hearing Association and the American Academy of Audiology, Dr. Joan Burleigh received her Ph.D. in Special Needs from Colorado State University. Dr. Burleigh previously earned a B.S. degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from the University of Tulsa and her M.A. degree in Audiology from Northwestern University.
